Why Read This? The one-sentence sell. What do you get for showing up to this book, even when it's hard?

A gothic siren romantasy where a woman hiding monstrous power is blood-bonded to the king who needs her to save both their kingdoms. The tension between Imogens fear of herself and Theos unwavering belief in her is chefs kiss.

Synopsis

The monster is always slain… Imogen Nel is in hiding. Hiding from a cruel kingdom that believes Sirens are monstrous, blood-hungry creatures. Hiding from a king and his captain who viciously hunt her kind. Hiding from her own alluring abilities. By keeping herself from the sea, Imogen’s bloodlust is dulled, and her black wings remain hidden beneath her skin. When a neighboring king comes to visit, Imogen can no longer hide. He knows precisely what she is, and he believes she can save both their kingdoms from an even greater monster. But Imogen’s power threatens to violently reveal itself, and the two form a blood bond that protects them both. They flee the kingdom together, traversing waters teeming with the undead. As the lines between duty to their people and desire for each other begin to blur, Imogen worries her own ancestral powers may not be enough to kill what hunts her—the only way to defeat a monster may be to become one herself.

At a Glance

Kalie Cassidys debut reads like someone who has been honing this story for years—the atmospheric world-building is thick with salt and dread, and the siren lore feels genuinely fresh. The blood bond between Imogen and Theo creates this constant simmer of intimacy-by-proximity that makes the slow burn feel almost unbearable in the best way. Fair warning: this is book one of a duology and ends on a cliffhanger, so dont start it unless you are prepared to wait. Content warning for genuinely unsettling undead siren imagery and on-page gore. Read this at night with the lights low—it was made for that energy.
