Why Read This? The one-sentence sell. What do you get for showing up to this book, even when it's hard?

Lyra is one of the most vivid protagonists in all of fantasy—fearless, cunning, and completely herself. Pullman builds a world that feels both wondrous and unsettling, where every discovery raises the stakes higher.

Synopsis

Lyra is rushing to the cold, far North, where witch clans and armored bears rule. North, where the Gobblers take the children they steal--including her friend Roger. North, where her fearsome uncle Asriel is trying to build a bridge to a parallel world. Can one small girl make a difference in such great and terrible endeavors? This is Lyra: a savage, a schemer, a liar, and as fierce and true a champion as Roger or Asriel could want--but what Lyra doesn't know is that to help one of them will be to betray the other.

At a Glance

This is the book that ruined a generation of kids in the best possible way. Lyra is a liar, a scrapper, and absolutely magnetic. The daemon concept alone is worth the read—you will spend the rest of your life wondering what form yours would take.
