Why Read This? The one-sentence sell. What do you get for showing up to this book, even when it's hard?

You'll get a satisfying blend of romantic fulfillment and character growth, with a slow-burn love story that rewards patience.

Synopsis

Marguerite Florian is a spy with two problems. A former employer wants her dead, and one of her new bodyguards is a far too good-looking paladin with a martyr complex. Shane is a paladin with three problems. His god is dead, his client is much too attractive for his peace of mind, and a powerful organization is trying to have them both killed. Add in a brilliant artificer with a device that may change the world, a glittering and dangerous court, and a demon-led cult, and Shane and Marguerite will be lucky to escape with their souls intact, never mind their hearts. . .

At a Glance

Kingfisher does it again—Shane is the most earnest, poetry-loving, self-sacrificing paladin you'll ever meet, and Marguerite is the pragmatic spy who can't figure out why this giant man keeps throwing himself between her and danger. The banter crackles, the bodyguard tension simmers for hundreds of pages, and when it finally breaks, it's deeply satisfying. Comfort fantasy with genuine heart and Kingfisher's trademark dry humor.
