Common questions about tropes
All the ones you actually search for. Enemies-to-lovers, slow burn, forced proximity, fated mates, grumpy/sunshine, only one bed, fake dating, morally gray love interest, found family, forbidden love, arranged marriage, villain gets the girl, why choose/reverse harem, and about 70 more. We also separate romance tropes (plot situations like forced proximity) from relationship dynamics (character energy like grumpy/sunshine) so you can stack them.
Yes—trope stacking is kind of our whole thing. Want enemies-to-lovers AND forced proximity AND slow burn? Go for it. The more tropes you stack, the more specific your results. It's the difference between "romance" and "that very specific thing I've been craving for three weeks." Head to the tropes page and start combining.
Over 3,600 romantasy books are tagged with tropes right now, and we're adding more constantly. Every book gets tagged across 40+ fields, not just tropes—so you also get spice, content warnings, mood, dynamics, and more. If a book you're looking for isn't tagged yet, Premium members can get instant tagging for any title.
Goodreads shelves are user-created, which means "enemies-to-lovers" might include books where the characters mildly disliked each other for one chapter. There's no standard, no quality control, and no way to combine multiple shelves in a search. MoodReads tropes are consistently applied with actual definitions. When we say enemies-to-lovers, we mean they genuinely wanted each other dead (or at least ruined). Plus you can filter by multiple tropes at once, which Goodreads just... can't do.
Tropes are plot situations—enemies-to-lovers, only one bed, fake dating, forbidden love. These are things that happen in the story. Dynamics are the energy between characters—grumpy/sunshine, golden retriever/black cat, cinnamon roll hero, ice queen. MoodReads tracks both separately so you can find a grumpy/sunshine fake dating book, or an ice queen in a forced proximity situation, or whatever your very specific heart desires.
Absolutely. That's the point. Use BookMatch and just describe what you want: "enemies-to-lovers with fae, slow burn, guaranteed HEA, and at least 3 chili peppers." Or browse by trope and use filters to narrow down. You can also search your own TBR shelf—because somewhere in those 500 books is exactly what you want, you just can't find it.
