A darkly funny, frightening novel about a young woman learning how to take what she wants from a witch who may be too good to be true. After being dumped by her boyfriend of many years, Annie has played it nice and safe her whole life. Seeking a fresh start, she accepts a teaching position that moves her from Manhattan to a small village upstate. There she meets Sophie, a beautiful, confident, utterly magnetic woman who quickly becomes the best friend Annie has ever had. But something is off about Sophie—she collects high-end spiders, lives alone in a high-end home deep in the woods, and seems to have an unsettling, almost supernatural grip on the town.
