Why Read This? The one-sentence sell. What do you get for showing up to this book, even when it's hard?

A hauntingly beautiful 1982 YA fantasy where a servant girl must choose between destroying a gorgeous vampyre or saving the spark of good still inside him. The lunar setting is unlike anything else in the genre—lush, strange, and utterly transportive.

Synopsis

Aeriel is kidnapped by the darkangel, a black-winged vampyre of astounding beauty and youth. In his castle keep, she serves his 13 wives, wraiths whose souls he stole. She must kill him before his next marriage and comes into full power, but is captivated by his magnificent beauty and inner spark of goodness. Will she choose to save humanity or his soul?

At a Glance

Published in 1982, The Darkangel predates the romantasy genre by decades but carries its DNA—a captor romance wrapped in fairy tale logic, set on a terraformed Moon. Aeriel is a slave girl who sets out to kill the darkangel that kidnapped her mistress, only to find herself keeping house for his thirteen ghost-brides instead. Pierce writes like shes composing an incantation; the prose is ornate, deliberate, and unlike anything in modern YA. The romance is earned through moral reckoning rather than attraction. First in a trilogy that gets progressively more feminist and more strange. Best for readers who love poetic prose, patient world-building, and stories where compassion is the real weapon.
