Why Read This? The one-sentence sell. What do you get for showing up to this book, even when it's hard?

Cordova weaves Latin American and Afro-Cuban mythology into a vivid portal fantasy that feels fresh and culturally rich. Alex is a reluctant hero you root for, and the bisexual representation is woven naturally into the story rather than treated as a plot device. The Spanglish dialogue and Los Lagos worldbuilding are standouts.

Synopsis

I was chosen by the Deos. Even gods make mistakes. Alex is a bruja, the most powerful witch in a generation…and she hates magic. At her Deathday celebration, Alex performs a spell to rid herself of her power. But it backfires. Her whole family vanishes into thin air, leaving her alone with Nova, a brujo she can’t trust, but who may be Alex’s only chance at saving her family.

At a Glance

A Latin American mythology-infused portal fantasy where Alex, a bruja who rejects her power, accidentally banishes her entire family during her Deathday celebration. The journey through Los Lagos—a dark in-between realm—draws from Santeria, Dominican, and Afro-Cuban traditions in ways that feel genuinely lived-in rather than decorative. The love triangle resolves in favor of Rishi (F/F), though Nova gets more page time. Zero spice—this is YA through and through—but the family bonds and cultural identity themes hit hard. The all-POC cast and bisexual protagonist were groundbreaking for 2016 YA fantasy.
