Why Read This? The one-sentence sell. What do you get for showing up to this book, even when it's hard?

A gritty, whip-smart urban fantasy where a half-fae PI navigates London's supernatural underworld with a cigarette in one hand and terrible life choices in the other. The sapphic tension with the vampire Prince of Cups crackles off the page, and Alexis Hall's razor wit makes every chapter a delight.

Synopsis

First in the Kate Kane series. Kate Kane, paranormal investigator and daughter of the Queen of the Wild Hunt, is trying to make ends meet in a London where vampires, werewolves, and faeries are part of the political landscape. When a young werewolf is found murdered in a vampire nightclub, Kate takes the case—and finds herself dangerously drawn to Julian Saint-Germain, the ruthlessly elegant vampire Prince of Cups. As the investigation pulls her deeper into the supernatural underworld, Kate must navigate centuries-old power struggles, her own complicated fae heritage, and a growing attraction that could get her killed.

At a Glance

If you've ever wanted a paranormal detective noir with a lesbian lead who has genuinely terrible taste in women, this is your book. Kate Kane is basically if Philip Marlowe were a bisexual half-faerie princess, and the vampire love interest Julian Saint-Germain is the kind of dangerous that makes you root for the bad decision. Alexis Hall's signature wit is in full force—sharp, self-aware, and dripping with atmosphere. The London supernatural world-building is rich without being overwrought, and the mystery actually holds up.
