Why Read This? The one-sentence sell. What do you get for showing up to this book, even when it's hard?

A queer Narnia retelling where two lost boys find their way back to each other and to a magical world that accepts them fully. Beautifully written with themes of belonging, identity, and the courage to be yourself.

book details below may contain spoilers. some hidden

At a Glance

Standalone literary fantasy inspired by C.S. Lewis's Narnia, but with the Christian allegory removed and queer joy added. Two boys (Jeremy Cox and Rafe Howell) vanished in a West Virginia state park as children, reappeared six months later with no memory. Fifteen years later, vet tech Emilie Wendell needs Jeremy's help finding her missing sister in the same forest. The magical world is called Shanandoah (not Shenandoah). M/M romance between Jeremy and Rafe is tender, yearning, and entirely closed-door. Meg Shaffer's prose is lyrical and fairy-tale-esque with dry wit. Themes of belonging, identity, healing from trauma, and the courage to be yourself. Published July 16, 2024, 352 pages. Not a series—standalone novel alongside The Wishing Game.
