Why Read This? The one-sentence sell. What do you get for showing up to this book, even when it's hard?

You will see the modern world through a mythic lens, questioning what we worship and why. Gaiman weaves immigrant mythology into the American landscape with prose that is simultaneously dreamlike and razor-sharp.

Synopsis

Days before his release from prison, Shadow's wife, Laura, dies in a mysterious car crash. Numbly, he makes his way back home. On the plane, he encounters the enigmatic Mr Wednesday, who claims to be a refugee from a distant war, a former god and the king of America. Together they embark on a profoundly strange journey across the heart of the USA, whilst all around them a storm of preternatural and epic proportions threatens to break. Scary, gripping and deeply unsettling, American Gods takes a long, hard look into the soul of America. You'll be surprised by what - and who - it finds there...

At a Glance

This is not a romance—it is a sprawling, strange meditation on belief, identity, and what America does to the gods its immigrants brought along. Shadow is one of the great reluctant heroes of modern fantasy, and the road trip structure lets Gaiman paint small-town America as both mundane and mythic. Read it for the prose and the slow-creeping sense of cosmic dread, not for plot speed.
