Why Read This? The one-sentence sell. What do you get for showing up to this book, even when it's hard?

A high-octane urban fantasy thrill ride where a clairvoyant on the run from vampire mobsters gets pulled into supernatural Senate politics, time travel, and a love triangle that simmers across the entire long-running series.

Synopsis

Cassandra Palmer can see the future and communicate with spirits-talents that make her attractive to the dead and the undead. The ghosts of the dead aren't usually dangerous; they just like to talk...a lot. The undead are another matter. Like any sensible girl, Cassie tries to avoid vampires. But when the bloodsucking Mafioso she escaped three years ago finds Cassie again with vengeance on his mind, she's forced to turn to the vampire Senate for protection. The undead senators won't help her for nothing, and Cassie finds herself working with one of their most powerful members, a dangerously seductive master vampire-and the price he demands may be more than Cassie is willing to pay...

At a Glance

Book 1 of the massive Cassandra Palmer series (14 books, completed 2025). Cassie is a clairvoyant raised by a vampire mob boss, now on the run and pulled into vampire Senate politics and time travel. This is action-first urban fantasy with a slow-burn romance—the spice is minimal in book 1 but builds across the series. Heavy worldbuilding infodumps in this opener but the pacing is breakneck. Love triangle between Mircea (vampire senator) and Pritkin (war mage) is a series-long arc. Comparable to Kim Harrison's Hollows or Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson.
