Synopsis
When King Émeric struck down the last Dragon King of the corrupt Shadow Court, the Realm of Ilion spiraled towards an uncertain future. In his final moments, the Dragon King placed a curse on the Old Kingdom, so that anyone who ventured in to retrieve the crown of Ilion and take its power for themselves, would suffer from incurable madness. Two centuries have passed since the war and Adeline, a royal guard in the capital city of Caldera, has clawed her way to an elite position as a Keeper despite her status as a Halfling Fae. She possesses the unusual ability to find and eliminate the Shades, the shadow demons spawned by the Curse that still strangles Ilion. This ability, however, stems from the deadly magic that runs in her family, and she must be wary of drawing unwanted attention to it. Especially when she is under the command of the General of Ilion, who seems prepared to challenge her at every turn. When her best friend vanishes on a mission to retrieve the crown and break the curse, details about the history she’s been taught begin to transform before her eyes. Forced to confront dark realities about her own powers, Adeline must navigate a treacherous path, balancing her duty to the realm with her own survival if she’s going to save her friend. Aided by a mysterious queen and an ancient warrior race, Adeline and the General form a precarious alliance as they delve deeper into the secrets of the past. She must decide how much she’s willing to sacrifice in order to discover what the Gods and the Fates have in store for them all.
