Why Read This? The one-sentence sell. What do you get for showing up to this book, even when it's hard?

Schwab's debut is a gothic fairytale wrapped in mist and folklore. The atmosphere alone is worth the read - you can feel the wind on the moor in every chapter. The mystery of the disappearing children keeps pages turning even as the prose asks you to slow down and savor it.

Synopsis

The Near Witch is only an old story told to frighten children. If the wind calls at night, you must not listen. The wind is lonely, and always looking for company. And there are no witches anymore. Or so Lexi has been told. But the villagers are whispering about a stranger who appeared the night the children began to go missing. The wind seems to carry dark songs, and the old stories no longer feel like fairy tales. Lexi knows that no one is looking in the right places, and she sets out to uncover the truth.

At a Glance

Schwab's debut reads like a Brothers Grimm tale retold by someone who grew up on the moor. The village of Near is as much a character as Lexi or Cole - suspicious, insular, afraid of what it doesn't understand. This is atmosphere-first storytelling where the wind itself has a voice and the old songs carry real power. YA readers who want dark folklore and an aching sense of place will find exactly what they're looking for.
